Abstract
This paper examines job separations and their impact on earnings trajectories in Argentina, a country characterised by high formal job turnover. Using matched employer–employee administrative data, it analyses the evolution of workers’ earnings after leaving formal employment. Three years after separation, negative earnings gaps for movers compared with their stayer counterparts are larger than before the separation. Distinct patterns emerge between workers who move directly to a new job and those who experience a period of non-employment. Job-to-job movers see earnings gains, while those with delayed transitions face persistent losses that increase with the duration of non-employment. When controlling for job tenure, these patterns shift: job-to-job movers earn more on average than stayers, and the gap for delayed movers narrows substantially. The findings highlight the crucial role of formal job separations in shaping future earnings trajectories and show how transition timing and previous job experience affect long-term income outcomes.
