DESCRIPTION:Seminario de Investigación del IIEP \n(De facto) Historical Ethnic Borders and Contemporary Conflict in Africa \nExpositor | Emilio Depetris-Chauvin  | Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile \nAbstract \nWe examine the persistent effect of historical ethnic borders on contemporary conflict in Africa. Using variations across artificial regions within an ethnicity’s historical homeland\, an instrumental variable approach\, and recent techniques to address non-classical measurement error\, we establish a strong and sizeable positive estimate of the impact of ethnic borders on conflict. We find that both the intensive and extensive margins of conflict are higher in areas close to these borders. Our analysis uncovers several key mechanisms underlying this relationship: competition for agricultural land\, population pressure\, cultural similarity\, and weak property rights. \nCoautor con Ömer Özak (SMU) \nSobre el expositor \n Emilio Depetris-Chauvin es profesor asociado y director de investigación del Departamento de Economía de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. En 2024\,  fue galardonado por la Econometric Society con el premio Mario Henrique Simonsen Lecture. \nEs también editor asociado en el Journal of Comparative Economics e investigador en IZA. Sus áreas de interés en investigación y docencia son la economía política\, el desarrollo económico y el crecimiento económico. Está interesado especialmente en entender las causas y las consecuencias del conflicto y la violencia.
