DESCRIPTION:Expositor | Diego Friedheim | UTDT \nPolitical preferences shape consumers’ inflation expectations\, with consequences for household decisions. Using individual-level data on inflation expectations and political support from the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella survey\, and exploiting the manipulation of Argentina’s Consumer Price Index between 2007 and 2015 as a shock to the quality of public information\, we show that a deterioration in public information amplifies partisan differences in inflation expectations. Following the onset of the manipulation\, the gap in inflation expectations between government supporters and non-supporters increases significantly\, consistent with a Bayesian updating model in which agents place greater weight on their priors when public information becomes less informative. We further show that the manipulation had persistent effects on the partisanship of inflation expectations\, as well as on individual labor-market and consumption decisions. \nLugar | FCE-UBA | Aula Olivera
