DESCRIPTION:Expositor | Andrés César | CEDLAS-UNLP \nAbstract \nWhether automation helps developing economies upgrade within global value chains (GVCs) or reinforces existing hierarchies is central to the growth prospects of middle-income countries. This paper examines the causal impact of industrial robot adoption on countries’ participation in GVCs. We combine detailed indicators from the OECD’s Trade in Value Added (TiVA) database with robot data from the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) for the period 1995-2020. Our identification strategy exploits demographic-driven incentives to automate\, captured by past declines in birth rates across countries\, interacted with global industry trends in robotization\, providing exogenous variation in adoption. We find that automation significantly increases backward and forward GVC participation\, as well as output and employment\, relative to less exposed industries. These effects are concentrated in economies positioned downstream in GVCs. In contrast\, upstream exporters display limited integration gains\, suggesting that automation amplifies existing comparative advantages rather than creating new ones.
